Types of Services: Acknowledgements & Jurats

Date: September 29, 2021

Unsure about what service you need? In this series we are going to breakdown each type of notary services offered.

The two most common services requested by the community are acknowledgments and jurats. Acknowledgments and jurats are often confused because they both include a declaration, authentication of identity, and a signature. During the service, the notary public is not responsible for understanding the document you are signing. Here is the difference between the two.

What is an acknowledgement?

An acknowledgment is needed when you have a document to sign and your identity needs to be confirmed. Your notary public will need to verify your identity and you will need to declare that you are willing to sign a document. You may sign the document before or during the notary session.

What do I need to bring to my acknowledgement services?

You will need to bring a form of identification and the document you are signing. In Pennsylvania, the forms of identification accepted are government issued identifications such as a driver’s license, state ID,  passport, or military ID.

What is a jurat?

A jurat is needed when you need to sign a document and affirm the truthfulness of the contents. Your notary public will verify your identity and will administer a spoken oath or affirmation and you must respond verbally. Unlike acknowledgements, you will need to sign the document in the presence of your notary public.

What do I need to bring to my jurat services?

For your jurat service to be completed, you will need to bring a form of identification and the unsigned document you are signing.

Knowing the difference between the two services can help you understand which service to request. When in doubt, Native Notary is here to help guide you through the process and attend to your notary needs. Contact us with any questions or to schedule your appointment.
